Meta Revamps AI Labels After Photo Mix-Up

In today’s digital age, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasingly integral part of our daily lives, blurring the lines between reality and AI-generated content. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp, recently announced a noteworthy modification in how it labels social media posts that are suspected of being generated or altered using AI tools. The updated label now reads “AI Info” rather than the previous “Made with AI.” This change follows numerous complaints from photographers and artists who found their authentic photos being inaccurately tagged as AI-generated.

One significant incident involved Pete Souza, a former White House photographer, who observed that even minor modifications to images, such as cropping, were activating Meta’s AI detectors. This sparked widespread criticism from the artistic community, who felt the “Made with AI” label was misleading and compromised their work’s integrity. Acknowledging the issue, Meta stated that it is committed to balancing technological advancements with the responsibility of helping users understand their feed content.

“While we work with companies across the industry to improve the process so our labeling approach better matches our intent, we’re updating the ‘Made with AI’ label to ‘AI Info’ across our apps, which people can click for more information,” Meta stated.

The proliferation of AI technologies on the internet has made it increasingly difficult for the average user to distinguish between genuine and AI-generated content. This is particularly concerning as the 2024 US presidential election approaches, a period expected to see a surge in disinformation campaigns. Google researchers have highlighted that AI-generated images of politicians and celebrities are among the most popular uses of this technology by malicious actors. Tech companies are actively trying to combat these threats. For instance, OpenAI has claimed to have disrupted social media disinformation campaigns connected to Russia, China, Iran, and Israel, all utilizing its AI tools. Apple has also announced plans to add metadata to label images, whether they are altered, edited, or generated by AI.

Despite these proactive measures, the technology is evolving at a pace that outstrips the companies’ ability to manage it. A new term, “slop,” has emerged to describe the growing influx of AI-generated posts. Google, for example, faced significant backlash when its AI Overview summaries for searches propagated racist conspiracy theories and hazardous health advice, such as recommending glue to keep pizza cheese from slipping off. Though Google has since slowed the rollout of AI Overviews, the incident underscores the profound challenges tech companies encounter in regulating AI-generated content.

Meta’s decision to revise its labeling system is a positive development but also underscores the complexities inherent in managing AI-generated content. The new “AI Info” label aims to offer more context and transparency but does not specify the exact AI tools used. This lack of detail could still leave some users perplexed. A Meta spokesperson confirmed that the contextual menu appearing when users tap on the “AI Info” badge remains unchanged, offering only a generic description of generative AI.
