Meta’s New AI Data Rules Spark Privacy Fears in Changing Tech World

Effective June 26, Meta will leverage user-generated data from its suite of platforms—Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads—to train its AI models. The collected data will fuel Meta’s AI assistant, Meta AI, which offers a wide array of services ranging from restaurant recommendations to coding advice. “Meta AI is designed to get things done, learn, create, and connect with the things that matter to you,” a Meta spokesperson explained. The AI assistant boasts a diverse skill set, capable of generating images, offering public speaking tips, and even assisting with home renovations.

The privacy framework in the United States starkly contrasts with that of the European Union. Unlike the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the U.S. lacks comprehensive national data privacy laws, leaving American users with fewer safeguards against data collection. For U.S. users feeling exposed, the most practical recourse is to complete the “Data Subject Rights for Third Party Information Used for AI at Meta” form available in Facebook’s Help Center. While this won’t entirely stop Meta from scraping data from profiles and posts, it will prompt the deletion of any publicly available third-party information Meta has collected about the user from the internet. Attempting to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to disguise one’s location as within the EU to avoid data collection has proven ineffective, as personal tests have shown it does not prevent Meta from gathering data.

In contrast, users in the EU and UK enjoy more robust privacy protections. Regulatory bodies such as the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) and the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) have requested Meta to delay its AI data collection plans until privacy concerns are adequately addressed. Meta complied, albeit reluctantly, expressing frustration over the delay. “This is a step backward for European innovation, competition in AI development, and further delays bringing the benefits of AI to people in Europe,” stated a Meta representative. Consequently, Meta AI will not be launched in Europe for the time being. However, EU and UK users can still opt out of data collection by navigating to the Settings page on the Instagram or Facebook app, selecting “About,” scrolling down to the “Privacy Policy,” and completing the “Right to object” form under the Meta AI section.

Meta is not alone in facing scrutiny over its data collection practices. Other tech giants like OpenAI and Microsoft are embroiled in lawsuits alleging copyright infringement for using copyrighted material to train their AI models.
