Revolutionizing Nursing Education with Virtual Reality Simulation

In recent years, virtual reality simulation (VRS) has emerged as a transformative tool in nursing education, providing students with an immersive and interactive environment to hone their skills. Among the various competencies nursing students must develop, communication skills are paramount. This article delves into the findings of a systematic review and meta-analysis published on July 5, 2024, which investigates the effect of VRS on enhancing communication skills among nursing students.

Virtual reality simulation allows users to experience a sense of presence in a virtual environment, making it an effective educational tool. In nursing education, VRS has been adopted to simulate clinical scenarios, providing students with opportunities to practice and refine their skills in a controlled, risk-free setting. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of VRS as traditional clinical practicum programs were disrupted, prompting nursing schools worldwide to seek alternative methods for training students.

The systematic review and meta-analysis followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The researchers employed the “PICO” framework, focusing on nursing students as the population, VRS targeting communication skills enhancement as the intervention, control groups without intervention or those undergoing general classes as the comparator, and communication skills as the outcome. The search strategy yielded 301 results from nine databases, and 10 studies were selected for inclusion. The overall effect size for communication skills was calculated using MIX 2.0 Pro software, revealing a significant overall effect size of 0.44. This indicates that VRS positively impacts nursing students’ ability to communicate effectively, with several factors contributing to this improvement.

One of the notable factors influencing communication skills improvement is the timing of outcome measurements. Studies that measured communication skills immediately after the intervention showed significant improvements, suggesting that the immediate application of learned skills in a simulated environment reinforces communication abilities. These include technological barriers, such as the need for access to advanced technology and infrastructure, which may not be available in all educational institutions. Additionally, there is a need for standardized VRS programs to ensure consistency in training and assessment across different institutions. Continuous evaluation is also necessary to refine VRS programs and assess their long-term impact on communication skills and other competencies.

Beyond communication skills, VRS offers a range of advantages that extend to other critical areas of nursing education, such as critical thinking, self-efficacy, teamwork, and overall learning satisfaction. The systematic review and meta-analysis also assessed the impact of VRS on these secondary outcomes. For instance, the significant improvement in critical thinking skills among nursing students participating in VRS programs is noteworthy. Critical thinking is essential for nurses as it enables them to analyze situations, make informed decisions, and provide high-quality patient care. VRS enhances critical thinking through realistic scenarios, immediate feedback, and opportunities for repetition and reflection. These elements encourage active learning, critical analysis, and adaptability.

Self-efficacy, or the belief in one’s ability to succeed in specific tasks, is another crucial factor for nursing students. The meta-analysis found that VRS positively impacted self-efficacy, empowering students to approach clinical challenges with greater confidence. VRS provides a risk-free setting where students can practice and make mistakes without fear of harming patients, encourages experimentation, and builds confidence through mastery experiences and social modeling. Additionally, VRS fosters teamwork and collaboration by including interprofessional scenarios that require students to work with virtual team members from different healthcare disciplines.
